JET Magazine, July 11, 1963, features Myrlie Evers and Children of Slain Civil Rights Activist, Medgar Evers.
Thirty years later, Myrlie would learn a witness had finally come forward, but a secret organization, the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission (funded by state taxpayers to spy on civil rights activists), had spirited away evidence relating to Medgar’s killing, including all original trial transcripts. Fortunately, she had kept a transcript in a safe deposit box, and in 1994, a jury of eight blacks and four whites convicted 73-year-old Byron De La Beckwith of Medgar’s assassination.
