Founded in Chicago by Johnson Publishing Company, Ebony (1945) and Jet (1951) are arguably the two most widely known and read African American magazines.
Ebony declined in later years, becoming a black People instead of a black Life, which was what it was when it started. But when it counted, in the 50s and 60s, it was on top of its game.
